My Geoengineering Journey

Now at the end of my geoengineering journey, I would love to proclaim a clear ‘solution’ to climate change and I did expect one method would stand out above the rest. The fact that different geoengineering methods are more appropriate depending on your perspective has become increasingly clear. For instance, from a purely climate change perspective DACCS is probably the most effective, from an economic perspective probably BECCS. In terms of spreading the negative impacts, space sunshades could be seen as the fairest, but enhanced weathering, biochar and afforestation/reforestation are much easier to implement locally.
I originally planned to elaborate on Renee’s Review (see earlier post) and rank all of the geoengineering methods based on my opinion. However, I feel this is no longer appropriate because it is not that clear-cut. Therefore, I have listed whether I think each method should be implemented on a large scale, small scale or not at all, to reach the 2 degree target.
Surprisingly, I feel slightly more optimistic about reaching the 2oC target, although I am very sceptical about reaching 1.5oC. In answer to my blog title, I feel it could be ‘Two Degree’ by 2100 if a combination of geoengineering approaches are explored alongside reduced emissions. I hope you’ve enjoyed discovering the world of geoengineering as much as I have. Until next time!
